L'uomo che viaggia e non conosce ancora la città che lo aspetta lungo la strada, si domanda come sarà la reggia, la caserma, il mulino, il teatro, il bazar. In ogni città dell'impero ogni edificio è differente e disposto in un diverso ordine: ma appena il forestiero arriva alla città sconosciuta e getta lo sguardo in mezzo a quella pigna di pagode e abbaini e fienili, seguendo il ghirigoro di canali orti immondezzai, subito distingue quali sono i palazzi dei principi, quali i templi dei grandi sacerdoti, la locanda, la prigione, la suburra. Cosí - dice qualcuno - si conferma l'ipotesi che ogni uomo porta nella mente una città fatta soltanto di differenze, una città senza figure e senza forma, e le città particolari la riempiono.
Non cosí a Zoe. In ogni luogo di questa città si potrebbe volta a volta dormire, fabbricare arnesi, cucinare, accumulare monete d'oro, svestirsi, regnare, vendere, interrogare oracoli. Qualsiasi tetto a piramide potrebbe coprire tanto il lazzaretto dei lebbrosi quanto le terme delle odalische. Il viaggiatore gira gira e non ha che dubbi: non riuscendo a distinguere i punti della città, anche i punti che egli tiene distinti nella mente gli si mescolano. Ne inferisce questo: se l'esistenza in tutti i suoi momenti è tutta se stessa, la città di Zoe è il luogo dell'esistenza indivisibile. Ma perché allora la città? Quale linea separa il dentro dal fuori, il rombo delle ruote dall'ululo dei lupi?

 Francesca Vezzani nasce a Reggio Emilia nel 1974 e inizia a fotografare nel 1985. Studia architettura a Ferrara e si laurea nel 2000. L'interesse per immagini architettoniche particolari e disorientanti si forma nel 1998, durante i viaggi-studio del periodo universitario. Dal 2001 al 2003 vive e lavora a Londra, dove sviluppa ricerche fotografiche soprattutto nel campo dell'architettura moderna e contemporanea. Partecipa a diversi concorsi fotografici, pubblica ed espone alcuni dei lavori universitari e la tesi di laurea (segnalata da ASSIRCO Giovani) in diverse sedi reggiane, ferraresi e ravennate. Dal 2005 è membro dell'associazione fotografica REfoto di Reggio Emilia e dal 2006 della Photographers Gallery di Londra.
Nel novembre 2006 vince il concorso fotografico Luci/Ombre in Architettura, indetto dall'associazione culturale ArchCineFoto di Venezia.
Espone la serie Labirinti durante la Settimana della Fotografia Europea 2007 presso l'hotel Express di Reggio Emilia nel maggio del 2007 e presso Croydon Clocktower di Londra nell'agosto del 2007.

The man who is traveling and does not yet know the city awaiting him along his route wonders what the palace will be like, the barracks, the mill, the theatre, the bazaar. In every city of the empire every building is different and set in a different order: but as soon as the stranger arrives at the unknown city and his eye penetrates the pine cone of pagodas and garrets and haymows, following the scrawl of canals, gardens, rubbish heaps, he immediately distinguishes which are the princes' palaces, the high priests' temples, the tavern, the prison, the slum. This - some say - confirms the hypothesis that each man bears in his mind a city made only of differences, a city without figures and without form, and the individual cities fill it up.
This is not true of Zoe. In every point of this city you can, in turn, sleep, make tools, cook, accumulate gold, disrobe, reign, sell, question oracles. Any one of its pyramid roofs could cover the leprosarium or the odalisques' baths. The traveller roams all around and has nothing but doubts: he is unable to distinguish the features of the city, the features he keeps distinct in his mind also mingle. He infers this: if existence in all its moments is all of itself, Zoe is the place of indivisible existence. But why, then, does the city exist? What line separates the inside from the outside, the rumble of wheels from the howl of wolves?

Francesca Vezzani was born in Reggio Emilia in 1974 and begun practicing photography in 1985. She studied Architecture in Ferrara and graduated in 2000. Her interest for disorientation in architecture was formed in 1998, while travelling during her University years. From 2001 to 2003 she lived and worked in London, where she begun to explore photography mainly in the modern and contemporary architecture field. She participated in several photographic competitions, published and exhibited some University works and her graduation thesis (which gained a special mention from ASSIRCO Giovani) in Reggio Emilia, Ferrara and Ravenna. She has been a member of the photographic association REfoto in Reggio Emilia since 2005 and of the Photographers Gallery in London since 2006. In November 2006 she was a winner in the competition Luci e Colori in Architettura (Lights and Colours in Architecture), organized by the cultural association ArchCineFoto in Venice. Her photographic series Labyrinths was exhibited during the European Photography Week 2007 (Fotografia Europea 2007) at the Express Hotel in Reggio Emilia and at the Croydon Clocktower in London. She moved back to London at the beginning of 2006, where she lives and works as architect and photographer.
